Mercedes-Benz G500

This 5-passenger, body-on-frame 4-dr wagon was designed by Mercedes-Benz for the German army in the 1970s and recently adapted for the U.S. as a luxury SUV. "G" denotes the German term Galaendewagen--cross-country vehicle--and a tall, relatively narrow build reveals an all-terrain orientation. Hand-built by Magna Steyr on behalf of Mercedes-Benz in a special factory located in Graz, Austria, the G-Class is designed to handle the roughest of terrain while keeping its occupants in the lap of luxury. It can climb grades of up to 36 degrees, and features ground clearance of more than eight inches.

The G500 has a 292-hp 5.0-liter V8 and features a 5-speed automatic transmission, anti-skid/traction control, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with brake assist, and all-wheel drive with low-range gearing. Designed for severe off-road use, the AWD system allows on-the-fly low-range engagement up to 15 mph, and includes locking front, center, and rear differentials. The G500 also has18-inch alloy wheels, sunroof, wood/leather interior trim, heated front and rear seats, and Mercedes' assistance and navigation systems.
